Dance/NOW: ECU Dance Blog #3

A word from the DAC...

I'm proud to present the first blog post from our resident ECDA blogger, Danie Johnson - thank you, Danie!  Danie and I will be working together to create the blogs each week.  But make sure you email us with any achievements, announcements or professional opportunities so that we can share them with the rest of our dance family!

With our first performance of the year coming up later this week, I thought I'd add a "quote of the week" to the blog.  This one is by the American writer and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

As we all move through our daily classes, and some towards the stage with its cacophony of lights and excitement, we might consider these words as a call to stay in the present moment of our dancing; in the deep, fleshy richness of each movement as it unfolds within us.  In doing so, we give ourselves the opportunity to transform this beloved art from one of mere display into one that offers the viewer an opportunity to see beyond the limitations of daily life into the core of our human potential.  That limitless potential lies in the heart of each and every one of you and I look forward to watching it unfold in classes and on the stage this week.

And now, on with the blog!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dancers love to watch dance almost as much as we love to actually perform dance. The dance students here at East Carolina are lucky enough to get FREE Comp tickets to see shows throughout the year! It doesn’t get much better than FREE! These golden tickets are available in the Messick Box Office (located across from Connie’s office). So make sure to go and get your ticket soon, before all the good seats in Wright Auditorium are taken, and don’t forget to bring your One Card!

The ECU Police are cracking down on parking this Semester-which certainly affects all of the residents of the Messick building. Just be aware of this and be careful about parking outside. With that being said, drivers, if you do park in grid to avoid a ticket- make sure you do NOT walk alone back to your car (especially at night). The buddy system is the ONLY system!

 UPCOMING EVENTS
The East Carolina Dance Association will be having a booth at the Hospital for Halloween, as a way to give back and entertain the children whom are spending this holiday in the hospital. It is likely that we will be dressing up and painting pumpkins with all the cute faces of Vidant Medical Center. More information and details will be provided later, but PLEASE let one of the ECDA officers know if you would like to help with this event!

And another ECDA announcement:  Make sure you turn in your money for clothing BY SEPTEMBER 23rd! Samples of clothing are downstairs by Studio Theatre if there is uncertainty with sizes. Turn in your order form as well as your payment (Cash or Check) to your ECDA class representative or an ECDA officer!

The big weekend is finally approaching! For the first time EVER, the Dancers of the School of Theatre and Dance will get the chance to present a show in the beautiful and historical Wright Auditorium. We will get to show the school that not only can Pirates kick brown footballs, but they can also kick their face! With works by Galina Panova, Patti Weeks, Dirk Lumbard, Marissa Nesbit, John Dixon, Teal Darkenwald, Tommi Galaska, and Joe Joe Smith, this show will be full of fantastic artistry and lots of surprises.

Come see the magic this weekend:

Friday 9/19 at 8pm
Saturday 9/20 at 2pm and 8pm
Sunday 9/21 at 2pm

And don’t forget that the Senior Choreography Auditions will be happening in studio 114 on Saturday, September 27, from 10:30 am to 1:30pm (sign in starts at 10am). Come prepared with an open mind and LOTS of energy; it will certainly be needed to audition for these talented and eager young artists!

 CONGRATS!!!
To all of you for rocking out the first few weeks of the semester!  As we move into the next phase of our production calendar, keep your energy high and your bodies grounded so that we all stay healthy and happy and dancing at our best!
