Dance/NOW: ECU Dance Blog #2

Dear Dancers,

Well, we're only two full weeks into the semester and things are off to a fabulous start.  Though I sadly was not able to attend the Dance 2015 auditions, the rest of the dance faculty were thoroughly impressed by the level of professionalism and excellent dancing that took place just one short week ago.  And our esteemed guest artist, Joe-Joe Smith, has been raving about everyone's dancing in his classes and in his new work. Way to go, everyone!

As we move closer to our first annual show at the Wright Auditorium, there are a few important announcements and upcoming events for everyone to keep in mind.  And, of course, there are always noteworthy achievements by our students and faculty to report.

Read on, my friends!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Comp Tickets:  Every major in the SoTD will receive one "comp" ticket to our show at the Wright Auditorium.  Keep an eye out on Callboard for details on how to get your complimentary ticket to what should be a fabulous evening of dance art!  And make sure you invite your friends and family to attend. It's a lot more fun performing with a full audience of enthusiastic dance lovers!

LUNCH/TIME/TALKS
I'm happy to report that I was able to hold the first session of my lunch time talk initiative this past week.  I had such a rich and rewarding conversation with the majors in attendance that I was almost late for my next class. Yikes! Please join me this Thursday from 12-12:25pm for the next chance to "chat with the DAC."   And remember, any topic is fair game and you don't have to sign up in advance or stay the whole time. Please just drop in to say hello.  I'd love to see you!

 UPCOMING EVENTS

FLASHMOB!!!
That's right, get the week started dancing in, or coming to support, the hip-hop flashmob that is happening at 12:30pm on Wednesday, 9/10, in front of Wright Place.  With choreography by Joe-Joe "Grooves" Smith, this fun event is designed to set a buzz in motion about our upcoming concert at the Wright Auditorium.  I can't wait to see the response of the students who are lucky enough to be having lunch at Wright Place tomorrow. Knock 'em dead, dancers!

REBEL 57 Choreography Competition:
Choreographic entries for this year's Rebel Student Arts & Literary Magazine competition will be filmed this Friday, 9/12, from 2:30-5pm in the Archie Burnette Studio Theater. The competition is open to all ECU students.  Please click on the web links below for more information including details on the competition and guidelines for entering work.

 CONGRATS!!!

To all of the fabulous dance majors cast in guest artist and faculty works over the weekend.  Well done!  All of the choreographers are extremely excited to begin working with you over the next few weeks.  Please keep a close eye on Callboard for updates on the rehearsal schedule.

To Performance major, Chloe Ament, for being elected as the new ECDA Freshmen Representative.  In just two short weeks, Chloe has shown incredible enthusiasm along with a clear desire to be involved in the program in every way possible.  It is no surprise that her level of engagement has been met with strong support from her fellow classmates. Congratulations, Chloe!!

And yet again to senior Performance major, Megan Rhodes, for having her solo accepted into the North Carolina Dance Alliance's 2014 Youth & College Showcase concert. The concert will take place on Sunday November 9, 2014 during the NCDA Annual Event, at the Durham School of the Arts. Well done, Megan!!

I know that there are many, many more achievements by our students and faculty to list here, so if I missed anything, please EMAIL ME!  One nice thing about a blog is that we can update it as often as we like to reflect the constant flow of activity and achievements by the beautiful people in our dance family.

Thanks everyone and have a great week!

John Dixon
Dance Area Coordinator
